Information about Barry District...

District LogoBarry District forms part of the Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan Scout Area or CATVOG. We are situated in a small seaside town just 9 miles to the southwest of Cardiff. Famous for our sandy beach Barry is an upcoming modern seaside town with a huge and industrious past.

Barry was once a famous port and was mainly known for its movement of coal from the welsh valleys via our docks to places all around the world by boat. We also once housed a busy Butlins holiday camp and fairground which was a holiday destination for miners from all over the Welsh valleys and the UK until the mid 1980's when the town began to lose large parts of its tourist industry due to a downturn in the economy. However recently well-known television Series Gavin and Stacey has seen new interest created in the town leading the Welsh Government to announce a £9m regeneration project for the town meaning development of the old docks into a residential, retail and social area, to include access to water sports and education facilities.

Barry Scout District is open to BOYS AND GIRLS aged between 5¾ to 18 years of age regardless of race, religion or disability. We aim to give young people the chance to develop themselves to their full physical, intellectual, social and spiritual potential through everyday adventure. We are the fastest growing youth movement in the world and can boast over 28 MILLION members worldwide in 216 COUNTRIES, with 499,000 in the UK alone. In Barry the nature of our activity is diverse and we offer both land and sea based Scout groups. We are very lucky in Barry to be able to boast 3 groups that are recognised by the Royal Navy as being centres of excellence for Sea Scouting, and that’s more than Portsmouth!!

But Scouting is not just for young people: We are always looking for adults to support Scouting in Barry and to take on your own Big Adventure. Now, that doesn't mean you have to wear a uniform or have loads of time on your hands. If you fancy helping in any way, whether you have a skill, a spare hour here or there or just want to re-live your childhood, Scouting can help so get in touch!!!!
